American Girl Movie

Any little girl age 4-14 knows that I love American Girl stuff: reading and discussing the books, taking trips to the store, fixing the dolls' hair, etc. I've also enjoyed the American Girl movies, which so far have been made only for television, but were excellent at capturing the heart of what I love about American Girls. The Samantha and Felicity movies never cease to be tearjerkers for me, though the Molly movie, done by Disney Channel, left quite a bit to be desired, at least for true fans who know the stories well (but I digress). At any rate, I have high hopes for the upcoming Kit movie, which is the first AG film to debut in theatres!

World Magazine got in on the AG action by offering a review of the Kit movie in an article titled "Beauty in Hardship" by Megan Basham, and I was encouraged to read what this conservative Christian magazine had to say about the movie I have high hopes for. The link I put here won't let you read the entire article, but what stood out to me was the emphasis the film puts on hardship in life (Kit lives during the Great Depression). Basham contrasts the glittering wealth-focused world of "Hannah Montana" (a popular Disney Channel show about a rich young rock star) with the make-do mentality of Kit's world, and points out how helpful that mentality will be for girls living today. Isn't it true that so much of what we see on television and in the movies makes us discontent and prone to greed? I'm thrilled to hear that the American Girl movie will be doing what it can to help our girls (and us) fight that sin!

That said, who wants to make a movie trip on July 2nd?

Great post. American Girl dolls are so good; not only are they great to play with but they also give some historical perspective and have books to cope with growing up.

So great!! I actually haven't read any of the "Kit" books - do you have them?

How about a date to the movies when it comes out?!?!?!

There are supplemental books for each doll called "Welcome to __ 's World" - they give tons of historical facts about each character's era; I just read them last month and I couldn't put them down! I brought them to my preschool kids b/c the illustration is, as always, so interesting! So while the kids loved looking at them I was obsessed with reading them - needless to say, I love the American Girls. I have Samantha from when I was little - she played Emily in A Little Princess with me when I was about 8 ;) (glad to hear the movie sounds promising - I've read good reviews of it too)

P.S. I finished THE MARQUIS' SECRET today. It was great! Thanks again for letting me borrow them. See you Thursday!

Great post, Gretchen! Now that my girls are passing the AG stage, (boo hoo) I am teaching an American Girl History Class at a homeschool co-op this fall! Yipee! I love them!

I ditto your thoughts on the AG Dolls and what they stand for vs Hannah Montana type images; I'm all for stripping away all the glamor of the popular Hollywood-style girl shows that minimize true femininity, make having a brain (and using it) seem un-romantic, and idolize all that has become the 'American Way'. (which seems to scream; lazy, disrespectful, boring and self-centered)

We loved Samantha (especially) and Felicity. We were not crazy about Molly. We have high hopes for Kit. If we lived close...we'd go with you!

Did I tell you I read Girl of the Limberlost and LOVED it? Great recommendation!

Hi Mrs. Gretchen! My mom said we're game for a matinee. Would you be able to go in the afternoon?

We just watched the Samantha movie on t.v. the other day. I am glad to know I was not the only one who shed a tear--I felt a little silly to be crying during a kids' movie. :-)

I am all excited bc a radio station that I listen to out here was giving away 200 tickets to the showing of it on July 2nd. I was all set to sign up and take Elise. But then I realized that the theater where they were showing it was an hour away. :-( I guess we will just have to watch it when it comes out around here....

And Karen, I read Girl of the Limberlost when I was a teen. It is a great book! I still have the copy that my mom gave me from her jr. high yrs. and I hope to pass it on to my girls!
